Which 2026 Buick and GMC models qualify for the car loan interest deduction?

Updated . By the Haley Buick GMC Midlothian Finance Department.

The short answer

Buyers who finance a new, U.S.-assembled vehicle for personal use can deduct up to $10,000 a year of loan interest for tax years 2025 through 2028, whether or not they itemize.[1][2] Among 2026 Buick and GMC models, the Acadia, Enclave, Yukon, Yukon XL, Canyon, Sierra HD, Sierra EV and HUMMER EV are built in U.S. plants; the Sierra 1500 depends on the specific truck; and the Terrain, Envista, Encore GX and Envision are imported and don't qualify.[4][5] Always confirm the final assembly point on the window sticker before you count on it.

The deduction in 60 seconds

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act created a temporary deduction for "qualified passenger vehicle loan interest." The IRS published final rules on September 8, 2026, and they take effect November 9, 2026.[3] To count, the vehicle and the loan both have to qualify:

  • The vehicle is new. Its original use has to start with you, so used vehicles don't qualify, even nearly new ones.[2]
  • Final assembly happened in the United States. Where the parts came from doesn't matter; where the vehicle was finally assembled does.[2]
  • It's a car, minivan, van, SUV or pickup with a gross vehicle weight rating under 14,000 pounds. That includes most heavy-duty pickups.[2]
  • It's for personal use, not business or commercial use.[2]
  • The loan was taken out after December 31, 2024, and is secured by a first lien on the vehicle, which describes a normal auto loan or retail installment contract.[2][11]

You can deduct up to $10,000 of that interest each year, and you don't have to itemize: it's claimed on Schedule 1-A whether you take the standard deduction or not.[1][12] The deduction shrinks by $200 for every $1,000 of modified adjusted gross income above $100,000, or $200,000 for married couples filing jointly.[2]

Model-by-model: which 2026 Buick and GMC vehicles qualify

Here's where each 2026 Buick and GMC we sell is assembled, from GM's own plant list and GM Authority's production records.[4][5][6] "Likely eligible" means the model is built only in U.S. plants. The deduction still depends on your loan, your use and your income.

Final assembly per General Motors and GM Authority, 2026 model year. Plants can change, so confirm the final assembly point on the window sticker of the exact vehicle. General information, not tax advice.

The short version for Buick shoppers: the Enclave is the only 2026 Buick built in the U.S. GM plans to move production of the next-generation Envision to its Fairfax plant in Kansas City by 2028.[7]For GMC shoppers, everything except the Terrain is built here, with the Sierra 1500 split between two plants. Compare the models in our GMC truck and SUV guide and Buick SUV guide.

The Sierra 1500 is the one to check truck by truck

The 2026 Sierra 1500 is built at Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana and at GM's Silao plant in Mexico, while every Sierra HD comes from Flint, Michigan.[5] Two trucks with the same trim, color and price can land on opposite sides of the line, so we check the VIN on every Sierra 1500 a buyer is financing.

How to check a specific vehicle

  1. Read the window sticker. The Monroney label lists the vehicle's "Final Assembly Point" by city, state or country.[2]
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA's decoder. Enter the 17-character VIN and look under Plant Information for the plant city and country.[9]
  3. Glance at the first character of the VIN. A VIN that starts with 1, 4 or 5 belongs to a vehicle built in the U.S.; 3 means Mexico and K means South Korea. It's a quick screen, not a substitute for the sticker.
  4. Ask us before you sign. We'll show you the window sticker and the VIN on any vehicle you're financing, and the VIN goes on your tax return when you claim the deduction.[1]

What doesn't qualify, and what does count

  • Leases. You don't own the vehicle or hold a purchase loan, so lease payments don't qualify.
  • Used vehicles, including certified pre-owned. The vehicle's original use has to start with you.[2]
  • Business or commercial use. A truck bought for your business, or a fleet vehicle, doesn't qualify.[2]
  • Cash purchases. No loan, no interest to deduct.
  • Personal loans, credit cards and loans from family. The loan has to be secured by a first lien on the vehicle, and loans from related parties don't count.[10][11]
  • Negative equity rolled in from a trade-in. If you owe more than your trade is worth and roll the difference into the new loan, that portion doesn't qualify because it paid for a prior vehicle.[2]

On the other side, items financed as part of the purchase, such as sales tax, extended warranties, service plans and accessories, can count toward qualifying interest under the final rules.[2] Refinancing a qualifying loan later still works, up to the remaining balance of the original loan.[13] Owe more than your trade is worth? See our negative-equity trade-in guide.

What it's worth: worked examples

The deduction lowers your taxable income, so what it saves you depends on your tax bracket. Here's the first year of interest on three typical loans at 2.9% APR for 72 months, a special rate GM Financial often runs on select new models.

What the deduction saves depends on your loan, your rate and your tax bracket.

$75,000 (Yukon range)$1,136$2,021$243$445$485

Illustrative only; not an offer of credit. GM Financial special rates are on approved credit, apply to select models and change monthly. Federal income tax only; Virginia may treat the deduction differently, so ask your tax preparer. At a higher rate, both the interest and the deduction are larger.

Income above the threshold reduces it. A married couple filing jointly with $205,000 of modified adjusted gross income is $5,000 over the line, which cuts the deduction by $1,000. On the $50,000 example, that leaves about $348 of deductible interest instead of $1,348.[2]

Why timing matters: the window closes after 2028

The deduction covers tax years 2025 through 2028 only, unless Congress extends it.[1] Because car loans pay the most interest in the early years, a loan that starts sooner puts more of its interest inside the window. Here's the same $50,000 loan, by the year its payments start.

How much interest on a $50,000, 72-month loan at 2.9% falls inside the deduction window
Payments startTax years coveredDeductible interestSaved at 22%

January 20282028$1,348About $296
January 2029None, unless extended$0$0

Illustrative only. Assumes interest is paid as scheduled and income below the phase-out.

Buying in December instead of January adds roughly one month of interest, about $121 on this loan, or $27 saved at a 22% bracket. That's worth knowing, but it isn't a reason to rush. The bigger factors are year-end pricing and incentives, which we cover in our 2026 year-end buying guide.

Lease or buy?

Leases don't qualify, so for a U.S.-built model like the Acadia, Yukon or Sierra HD the deduction tips the math a little further toward buying. For an imported model like the Terrain or Envista, nothing changes. Our lease vs. buy guide runs the numbers on a real Sierra and Acadia, and our buying and financing guide covers Virginia taxes and fees alongside the deduction. When it's time to file, our step-by-step claim guide walks through Schedule 1-A.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Buick Envista qualify for the car loan interest deduction?

No. The 2026 Buick Envista is built in South Korea, and only vehicles with final assembly in the U.S. qualify. Among 2026 Buicks, only the Enclave, built in Lansing, Michigan, is U.S.-assembled.

Is the GMC Yukon made in the USA?

Yes. The 2026 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL are assembled in Arlington, Texas, so a new Yukon financed for personal use is likely eligible. Confirm the final assembly point on the window sticker.

Is every GMC Sierra 1500 eligible?

No. The 2026 Sierra 1500 is built in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and in Silao, Mexico, so eligibility depends on the specific truck. Check the window sticker or run the VIN through NHTSA's decoder. Every Sierra HD is built in Flint, Michigan.

Can I take the deduction if I lease?

No. The deduction applies only to interest on a loan used to buy a new vehicle and secured by a first lien on it. Lease payments don't qualify.

Do I have to itemize to claim it?

No. You claim it on Schedule 1-A whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

What income limit applies?

The deduction is reduced by $200 for every $1,000 of modified adjusted gross income above $100,000 for single filers or $200,000 for married couples filing jointly.

Does a used Yukon qualify?

No. The vehicle has to be new, with its original use starting with you. Used and certified pre-owned vehicles don't qualify, even if they were built in the U.S.

Does rolled-over negative equity count?

No. Under the final IRS rules, the part of a loan that pays off negative equity from a trade-in doesn't qualify, because it paid for a prior vehicle.
